Moderately large, elongate fishes. Mouth large with long teeth. Teeth on palatines, present or absent on vomer. Spiny dorsal fin well separated from soft-rayed dorsal fin.
Generally found in tropical and subtropical zones in all oceans at bathypelagic depths. Common name refers to ability to swallow large food particles, often fishes of their own size.
