Trachurus Rafinesque, 1810
Dorsal accessory lateral line extending posteriorly at least to below first dorsal fin spine, usually much further posteriorly. Terminal ray of dorsal and anal fins closely positioned to adjacent ray or if not partially attached by inter-radial membrane; spinous dorsal fin high, longest spine slightly longer than lobe of soft dorsal fin. Shoulder girdle (cleithrum) margin smooth, without papillae. Scales in curved lateral line expanded dorsolaterally, scute-like.
Primarily benthopelagic species in 20-500 m, at times found at the surface in large schools, sometimes schooling with juvenile herrings; feeding primarily on crustaceans but also small fishes and squid.
