Anglerfishes with a single short dorsal spine (the illicium) lying within a cavity between the eyes. Head and body depressed, encased in an armour of hard spiny scales; mouth small, inferior, with villiform teeth. Dorsal fin small, comprizing only soft rays placed posteriorly on the tail. Anal fin a small lappet some distance behind the anus.
Mainly benthic fishes mostly in rather deep water.
