Elongate and compressed fishes. Head short, its bones thin and fragile; mouth protrusible. Dorsal fin long-based; anal fin present, short; pectoral and pelvic fins small; caudal fin poorly developed. Scales absent; lateral line present, continuing beyond body onto long lower caudal fin filament.
Mesopelagic fishes, feeding mainly on small fishes. Rarely caught.
