Neonesthes Regan and Trewavas, 1929
Body not especially elongate, its depth 6-8 times in SL. Anterior part of snout appearing upturned. No enlarged teeth (fangs) present in jaws; posterior part of upper jaw (maxilla) with erect short teeth fairly closely spaced, but not slanting rearward; gill bars with closely spaced needlelike long spines along their length. Post-orbital luminous organ single, but usually with a small antero-dorsal extension. Dorsal fin origin at 50-55% of SL, a short distance behind pelvic fin insertion; dorsal adipose fin present.
