Small fishes with subcylindrical head and body. Wide bands of mir setiform teeth in both jaws. Pelvic fins with 5 soft rays; caudal fin 8-9 procurrent spines. Scales firmly fixed, ctenoid and with spines. very deciduous, cycloid and without spines.
Rare bathypelagic or abyssal benthic fishes. Little is known of their food, reproduction or behaviour. They are of no commerical value.
