Synonyms
Hemipteronotus Lacepède, 1801, Hist. nat. Poiss., 3: 214 (type: H. quinquemaculatus Lacepède, 1801 = Coryphaena pentadactyla Linnaeus). Genus non valid. The description of H. quinquemaculatus, based on a drawing of Nieuhof (published by Bonnaterre, 1788, pl. 33 (fi). 126)), refers to Naucrates ductor. Coryphaena pentadactyla Linnaeus, is a composite species, see Bloch, 1797, 5: 115, and Valenciennes, 1840, in Cuv. Val., 14: 64-69.
