Genus Taaningichthys

Mouth large, jaws extending well beyond posterior margin of orbit. Maxillae only slightly expanded posteriorly. Eyes large, with a crescent of whitish tissue on posterior half of iris. Origin of dorsal fin behind vertical through base of ventral fin. Dn absent, Vn small. Body photophores present or absent. When present: 5-7 PO, more or less level; 3-10 VO, level; one SAO, at or slightly below horizontal septum. AO series divided into AOa and AOp; one Pol; 2 + 1 Prc, with Prc3 at horizontal septum. Both sexes with large undivided supra-caudal and infra-caudal glands, bordered by heavy black pigment.
High-oceanic, mesopelagic or bathypelagic in tropical, subtropical and temperate waters.
