Flatfishes with the eyes normally on right side (spp. of the genus Platichthys are often reversed). Preopercular margin free. All species from the Clofnam area belong to the subfamily Pleuronectinae, which is characterized by having the bases of the pelvic fins of equal lengths, the origin of the dorsal fin above the eyes and by having the lateral line equally developed on both sides.
Benthic, from a few to more than 1,000 m. Eggs and larvae pelagic. The settling on the bottom takes place in conjunction with the migration of the eye.
