Zoarces Cuvier, 1829
Body fairly elongate. Gill opening wide, reaching down below base of pectoral fin. No teeth on vomer or palatines. Dorsal fin with short spine-like finrays posteriorly. Pelvic fins present.
Bottom-living fishes of shallow coastal waters, both marine and brackish. Viviparous (except for Zoarces (Macrozoarces) americanus).
