Body oblong and compressed. Snout short and mouth oblique. Hind-margin of preoperculum serrate. Palatines toothless. Bases of soft dorsal and anal fins scaly; spiny and soft dorsal continuous; spines depressible in shallow groove. Branchiostegal rays 6.
Widespread in littoral zone of all warm seas, entering estuaries.
