Small- to medium-sized fishes with an oblong or elevated compressed body. Small, very protractile mouth with toothless palatines. Dorsal finrays VII-XI + 10-17; anal finrays III-V + 8-14. Scales cycloid. Lateral line complete or ending before or below end of dorsal fin.
Schooling fishes from coastal water. Enter brackish and fresh water.
