Genus Labrus

Labrus Linnaeus, 1758

Body oval, mouth protrusible. 1 row of strong canine-like teeth on jaws (rounded in old specimens). Posterior edge of preoperculum serrated only in very young specimens. Head scaly, except its top and snout. A few scales on inter-operculum (0 4, except L. bimaculatus: 7-13); 48 rows of scales behind eye; numerous scales on temporo-occipital surface. A few cephalid pores.
Shallow, temperate waters, mainly O-50 m, near bottom among seagrass meadows or around rocks. Benthic invertebrates and fishes.
