Genus Centracanthus

Centracanthus Rafinesque, 1810

Diagnosis: an elongate fish with pointed snout and larg eeyes. Vomer toothless. Middle part of dorsal fin low. Dorsal finrays XIII + 9-10; anal finrays III + 9-10; pectoral fins longer than pelvic fins. Lateral line scales 86-90. Colour: reddish above and white below. Size: to 20 cm SL.

Habitat: above rocky or gravel bottoms to a depth of at least 200 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: shoals approach the coast in breeding season (summer); pelagic eggs.

Distribution: in the Mediterranean and off Madeira, the Azores and Portugal southwards to Angola.
