Cryptopsaras Gill, 1883
Females distinct from Ceratias in having a large median and 2 smaller lateral caruncles on back, minute skin spines and very short illicium with esca attached almost directly to end of the pterygiophore. Males with anterior pair of denticles or teeth on lower jaw distinctly larger than the posterior pair. Larvae, males and juvenile females with subdermal pigment on gill-cover, back and caudal peduncle.
Largest females 200-350 mm, largest unattached males 10-11 mm, largest parasitic male 73 mm.
