Genus Gaidropsarus

Gaidropsarus Rafinesque, 1810

Elongate gadoid fishes with 2 dorsal fins, the first with an elongate first finray followed by fine short finrays; a single anal fin; second dorsal and anal fins long and of even height. 3 barbels, I on chin and I on each anterior nostril. Mouth large, the gape extending to the orbit or beyond and approximately half head length; upper jaw with a band of small sharp teeth, with larger curved teeth in the outer row (but never more than three times longer than other jaw teeth). Vertebrae 44-49.

Habitat: intertidal pools and sublittorally to 5-10 m. Food: decapod crustaceans and algae. Reproduction: probably spawns in July-August, young stages unknown.

Distribution: known only from Madeira, the Azores and the Canaries.
