Oral teeth in bands. Well-developed supramaxillary bone present. No conspicuous inter-narial spine. No serrations on ridges of head. Head pores small and often in groups. Dorsal fin with 14 or more soft rays and 3 spines. 30-37 rows of scales from nape to caudal fin base. Two scales on cheek, the anterior one modified as receptacle for end of maxilla.
Bathypelagic fishes of no commercial value. More or less rare.
