Body high, strongly compressed; frontal profile steep; mouth terminal; teeth very small. Dorsal, anal and pelvic fins very large; caudal fin truncate; a groove along dorsal and ventral profile, for reception of depressed fins, except the tips of the pelvic fins. Scales cycloid, deciduous.
Meso- to bathypelagic fishes.
