Scomberesocidae

Body elongated, compressed. Jaws pointed, produced. Teeth small, mostly uniserial. Lower pharyngeal bones fused into a plate, upper pharyngeal bones of third pair separated. Nasal organs as a pit with protruding lobe. No spines in fins. Dorsal and anal fins posterior in position, their origins opposite, posterior rays separated as detached finlets, pelvic fins abdominal, with 6 soft rays; pectoral fins on sides, short- caudal fin forked, its lobes subequal. Lateral line running along ventral margin of body, without a branch to pectoral fin origin. Scales small, cycloid, easily detached.
Oceanic, epipelagic fishes.
