Genus Echelus

Echelus Rafinesque, 1810

Body very elongate, snake-like, anus in anterior half. Snout subconical, lower jaw included. Anterior nostril tubular, posterior along margin of upper lip. Teeth subconical, small, multiserial in both jaws and vomer, Dorsal and anal fins well developed, confluent with caudal fin, dorsal origin before pectoral tip, pectoral fins well developed. Head pores reduced; temporal, post-orbital and inter-orbital pores absent.
