Squalus [Artedi] Linnaeus, 1758
Snout in front of mouth much shorter than distance from front of mouth to origin of pectoral fins. With or without nasal barbels. Pre-oral cleft slightly expanded inwardly. Teeth in both jaws with single cusp, directed outward along each side of jaw, forming a nearly unbroken cutting edge. Inner corner of pectoral fins rounded, sub-angular or slightly extended; dorsal spines lacking lateral grooves; caudal peduncle with longitudinal ridge on each side, generally with dorsal pre-caudal pit but without ventral pre-caudal pit; caudal fin without sub-terminal notch, anterior lobe well developed. Dermal denticles along sides of body lanceolate, heartshaped or tridentate.
